The Poo End of the Stick

Well friends, I certainly got the short end of the stick when it comes to health issues. I got the short, s**t-covered end of the stick! Let me explain.

Yesterday morning I woke up very early and threw up in bed a little bit. It wasn't a lot of vomit, but I felt very bad afterwords because it was hard to breathe and I was shaking a lot. I eventually was able to fall back asleep, but later that morning I threw up an awful lot of bile and phlegm. We went to the emergency vet and they took some x-rays and did some blood work.

It turns out that I have megaesophagus!!! And because of my loose esophagus, I also have a little bit of aspiration pneumonia. The pneumonia should go away with some antibiotics, but my big esophagus is a big problem. I have to eat standing up like a person to help the food go down into my stomach instead of into my lungs. Uh-oh. This means that I get to eat wet food now instead of dry food, which is good, I guess. But I don't feel so good right now.

I'm on five kinds of medication: cisapride and sucralfate for my megaesophagus, clindamycin and baytril for my pneumonia, and prilosec to help keep the acid in my tummy (just like Daddy!).

So for those of you keeping track, I now have in my medical history file: a broken pelvis, IVDD, and megaesophagus. WTF!?!?!?

Bye for now,
Poppy the Little Blonde Chihuahua

UPDATE, 2/9/09:
Mommy just talked to my regular vet (we went to the emergency clinic this weekend) and she says that it's quite possible that my big esophagus is temporary! Keep your paws crossed for me!

Poppy, I am so sorry! You did seem to get the poopy end of the stick. I am crossing my paws and purring my hardest that your megaesophagus is just temporary.

We are very sorry you are sick again. Our woofy eats standing from a raised bowl too, but he does not have megaesophagus. We like to hide under his raised bowls and bat at his feets while he eats. We think that he appreciates it. We used to both fit under there, but now it is a tight fit for just one of us.

We are purring and purring that you feel better soon.

Oh No Poppy!
I hope your big esophagus goes away too! I don't know what an IVDD is! Did it hurt? Get better and take all your meds like a good dog.

Hi Poppy, You sure did get the duty stick. At our house that is the stick that the humans use when they do our poop patrol. We just found you and would hate to see you go. Sorry about you catsisfur too. One of our catbros has Megacolon and it has been a real pain to treat. It's kinda like what you gots, but at the other end. He's 12 and has had it his whole life. Well, I gotta go, my daughter's making a fuss and the Humom has to go let her out. She just had puppies on Tuesday.Check back with you soon.

Poppy, my name is Tiny. I too am a little chihuahua and was told today that I have mega esophagus. My human mama is worried and is trying to save me. I am only about 12 weeks old and weight about 2 lbs.

I am being held up while being fed and she holds me up for 15 mins when I am through. So far I am holding down the food but man, I still feel like I want to throw up. She rubs my chest though and keeps telling me to hang in there and I think I will try.

I know what your going through poo. We will both be okay. Sounds like your human mama loves you like mine does.
