post-surgery

Here is the latest news about our little baby doggy...

Poppy is out of surgery now. The surgeon said it went as well as it could have. She had one ruptured disc, which they repaired. When we talked to them she was already awake and sitting up. They are going to keep her there overnight and tomorrow night, too. We can go visit her tomorrow morning. She has to be on strict crate rest for two weeks, during which time she may or may not regain movement in her legs. After that, it will be a several month long process of recovery. She'll probably need rehab. She still has a 90% chance of walking again. I was preparing myself for the worst and spent all afternoon looking at doggy wheelchairs online. We are hopeful that she won't ever need one...time will tell. (Here's a very inspirational picture of an adventuresome-looking dachsie)

Thank you all for your well wishes. I have been visiting your blogs, but I just don't have the energy to comment without Poppy here to "help" me. We'll be back soon.

Hi Sarah...
That is good news that surgery is done and that Poppy girl was sitting up. I'm sure you seeing her tomorrow will really help her (and you).

It is good that you are researching things and preparing just in case. But don't lose sight of the fact that she has a good shot of recovery (90% sounds pretty good to me!) especially with all your love!!!

Still saying prayers and thinking LOTS of good thoughts!

Yeah!
She's out of surgery! Mom & I are so relieved. Just like Ruby said, 90% is a REALLY good number!! With all our thoughts and prayers she'll be good as new soon! When you see her at the vet, could you give her some sugars from me & mom??
Love,
Mack

S&E,

She made it out of surgery successfully and is already sitting up - that is the spirit of a dog who will fight her way back to good health! Think positively and stay strong. I know how hard it is to sit in an empty house w/o your fur baby - cuddle lots w/ each other and w/ your kitty.

Fievel had knee surgery last winter and was on strict "bedrest" for six weeks - if you need any advice on how to make it easier on Poppy (or yourselves) or just want to vent about your frustration and sadness, please let me know.

Keeping Poppy and your family in my thoughts.

xo,
Frannie (Wiley & Fievel's mom)

Oh, Poppy! I am so glad your surgery went well. Thank goodness they at least know exactly what was wrong with you and how to fix it. I am sending my strongest healing purrs to you. You are very brave, and I know you can recover well from this. Stay strong, little Poppy.

Hi Sarah, we just wanted to send along our best wishes for Poppy. And to let you know that we went through this with our Cocker Spaniel, Simon 2 years ago. His back legs are partially paralyzed and was in a wheelchair for about a month. Now he can get around pretty well without it :-) If you have questions, I have a forum on my website that I used to document his progress.

We're so happy that the surgery went well. It's surely a good sign she was sitting up too, seeing you should lift her spirits as well.

Sending good doggie vibes your way!

We'll keep her in our thoughts and prayers.

I hope that Poppy will get well soon. I have a bad back too and was temporary paralysed for almost 2 mths last year august and I am lucky to be able to regain control of my hind legs after several session of acupunture and hydrotherapy. I did not go through any surgery.

The recovery process is slow and tough but you have to bare with it for a while. Be brave!

Snowball
